Sidney Marquez Boquiren
Biography
Sidney Marquez Boquiren (1970) was born in Manila, Philippines. He attended Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana under a full academic scholarship, where he studied composition with Michael Schelle. After graduating summa cum laude in 1992, he entered the Graduate Program in Music Composition at Duke University, receiving a Mary Duke Biddle Fellowship and continuing his compositional studies with Stephen Jaffe and Scott Lindroth. In 1994, he received the William Klenz Prize in Composition for his choral piece, Pater Noster. That same year he was a finalist at the International Alienor Composition Competition with his piece for solo harpsichord, Sala'am, which was commissioned and premiered by Zvi Meniker, with subsequent performances at the Boston Early Music Festival by Peter Marshall, and in the Netherlands by Annelie de Mann. His Salamat ("Thanks") for four baritone voices was performed at Tunugan ("Soundings"), the 18th Conference and Festival of the Asian Composers League (1997) in Manila, Philippines. He received his Ph.D. in Music Composition from Duke University in December 1999. His dissertation, Misa, was a setting of the Roman Catholic mass in Filipino (Tagalog dialect). A movement from this 90-minute work was performed by Koor Niewmusik during the 2000 Gaudeamus Music Festival in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where it received an Honorable Mention. Pagbabasbas ("Benediction"), the last movement of Pagsamba ("Worship"), was performed by the Zephyr Quartet during the 2001 Gaudeamus Music Festival. His most recent projects include a textless requiem for string orchestra (in memoriam... et benedicti sunt), as well as a choral piece on the theme of mourning (Dolor, Lamentatio, et Spes). Earlier this year, ensemble amarcord (a young male vocal group consisting of a countertenor, tenor, two baritones, and a bass) premiered his Gloria in Leipzig, Germany. Recent commissions include a staged production for Ayelet Harpaz and Anne La Berge and a work for the San Diego ensemble NOISE.
