Fall 2016

Project Information

Information will be added as the semester progresses.

Here's the gist: Your Final Project will be to propose the creation/invention of a new element, discuss its properties, and how it will interact with the common known elements on our earth, and explain why this new element should be invented!
• You will not work alone! There will be small teams so you can pool your ideas.
• Each team will present a poster at the LLC Symposium on Dec 5.
• Throughout the semester there will be assignments and exercises to help you think about different elements, properties and combinations.
• We will spend time discussing the project parameters in detail in class partway through the semester.

Element Assignment #1 is due Tue, Sep 13, 8am, e-mailed to me.
Instructions are in this pdf file.
For some visual examples of excellent Infographics, visit Compound Interest. The goal of this assignment is two-fold: First, you start thinking about a known element, its properties and uses. Second, you start thinking about how to present that information in an interesting way. This is a first step towards the Final Project.
Update: Here's a file (35 MB, pdf) of all the Infographics created by the class. Nice work!

Element Assignment #2 is due Mon, Oct 03, 11:59pm, e-mailed to me.
Instructions are in this pdf file.
Remember how difficult it was to find a suitable arrangement for the Alien Periodic Table based on physical properties and some known compounds? It turns out that if you know something about the subatomic particle arrangements, you can better organize the elements. This assignment is a second step towards the Final Project by helping you think about Alien Elements!
Here's a pdf file if you wanted to make your own Alien element cards.

Element Assignment #3 is due Thu, Oct 27, 11:59pm, e-mailed to me.
Instructions are in this pdf file.
By inventing a new compound made up of known elements, you have the opportunity to try creating something new, but yet stick to parameters of things that you are familiar with. This assignement is a third step towards the final project where you will invent a new Element!

Element Assignment #4 (Project Proposal) is due Fri, Nov 18, 11:59pm, e-mailed to me.
Instructions are in this pdf file.
This is a draft of your ideas for a New Element, i.e., what might go on your final poster. The more work you put into this, the less last-minute scrambling you'll need to do for your final poster presentation.

Project Groups and Members
Group 1: Marie, Dana, Christian
Group 2: Theo, Christina, Michelle, Nicole
Group 3: Chloe, Daryan, Therese
Group 4: Dean, Emily, Enida

Final Project Poster is to be presented Mon, Dec 05, 6-8pm, at the LLC Symposium.
Here's a link to the poster templates. Be sure to read the research poster guidelines. They're useful!
Also be sure to sign up for a poster-printing session BEFORE the poster presentation.

Instructions:
1. One member from your group should e-mail me the presentation by Fri, Dec 02, 11:59pm.
2. You will each prepare a 2-3 minute presentation to give when someone visits your poster to provide an overview and highlight the main points of your project.
3. You will be assigned at least one other poster to visit. You should ask some questions about the project you visit. You will then fill out a Project Visit Form that is due to me by Wed, Dec 07, in class.
4. Here is the schedule of when you will be standing in front of your poster:
   6:00-6:20pm: Marie, Theo, Chloe, Emily
   6:20-6:40pm: Dana, Christina, Daryan, Dean
   6:40-7:00pm: Christian, Nicole, Enida
Visiting Assignments will be given out at the event.
For Michelle and Therese who have class, there is an alternate arrangement.
