September 24, 1997--The University of San Diego's Index of Leading Economic Indicators for San Diego County rose 0.5 percent in July. Sharp gains in building permits and local stock prices led the move to the upside. Smaller advances were registered in tourism, help wanted advertising, and the outlook for the national economy. The only negative component for the month was initial claims for unemployment insurance.

July's increase puts the Index of Leading Economic Indicators for San Diego County at 135.7, up from July's reading of 135.0. Revised figures for building permits and the national Index of Leading Economic Indicators for May caused a downward revision of the local Index to 134.5 for that month. In turn, while there was no change in the Index value for June, the percentage change for that month was revised to +0.4%.
