Summer 1998
The Peoples' Republic of China

One of the most popular elements of the Study Abroad Program in Hong Kong is a trip to the Peoples' Republic of China. The first two years of the program, the visit was a one-day affair. The last two years, the trip involved an overnight stay. This year, a more leisurely, three-day, two-night trip is planned. The tentative itinerary is as follows:

  • Thursday, June 18
    • 8:00 AM pickup at Robert Black College
    • Bus ride to border, border formalities
    • Tour of downtown Shenzhen, including the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and a free market.
    • Lunch at a local restaurant.
    • Visit to the IBM plant in Shenzhen
    • Bus to Guangzhou
    • Dinner at a local restaurant.
    • Free evening to explore the city or enjoy the hotel amenities.

  • Friday, June 19
    • Light breakfast
    • Briefing by U.S. Department of Commerce official
    • Dim sum brunch
    • Sightseeing in Guangzhou (Sun-Yat Sen Memorial Hall, Five Rams Statue, Six Banyan Tree Pagoda, Chen Family Ancestral Hall)
    • Late afternoon and evening free, no scheduled dinner

  • Saturday, June 20
    • Western buffet breakfast at hotel
    • Bus to Foshan
    • Sightseeing in Foshan (textile [silk] factory, Ancestral Temple, folk art studio)
    • Lunch in a local restaurant
    • Bus back to Guangzhou
    • Train back to Hong Kong
    • Bus back to Robert Black College

The trip will cost approximately US$350. That price covers bus transportation throughout the trip, a group visa to enter China, one or more English-speaking guides, two nights double-occupancy at a five-star hotel (the White Swan Hotel, more for a single room), some large meals (one breakfast, three lunches, one dinner), admission to all sights, and train transportation back to Hong Kong. The trip is optional, but students in the past have found it to be a memorable experience and well worth the price.
