This modification of the applicants GPA can have sufficant impact upon ones chances for admission because 60% of the class is admitted solely upon the index calculation which assigns a maximum of 500 points to the adjusted GPA and 500 points to the LSAT. Last year those having an index above 814 were automatically admitted and those below 625 were likewise automatically rejected.
The UCLA Law School admissions task force has released a report stating that, "If we retain our emphasis on socialeconomic disadvantage, it may well be that we will receive increasing numbers of applicantions from lower income white and asian students, who will effectively displace some of those African American students admitted under the present system"
Clearly being poor or having overcome socioeconomic hurdles is not enough if you are of the wrong race.
Applicants are refusing to answer the racial questions on their applications. The second largest ethnic category is those who leave blank the racial checkboxes followed closely by "Other" and "Declined to State". Each of these groups has a high acceptance rate.
