AYER'S ARGUMENT FOR MORAL NIHILISM (EMOTIVISM)

I.
1. The meaning of a statement is the set of empirical conditions that would make it true.

2. Therefore, to have meaning, a statement must be empirically verifiable.

3. Therefore, every statement is either empirically verifiable or meaningless.

II.
1. Either moral statements are empirically verifiable, or they are meaningless.

2. Moral statements are not empirically verifiable.

3. Therefore, moral statements are meaningless.

III.
1. A meaningless statement can be neither true nor false.

2. Moral statements are meaningless.

3. Therefore, moral statements can be neither true nor false.

Every moral "statement" is only a direct expression of an emotion, not a statement about emotion.
