Simon G. M. Koo (
) is currently an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science and (by courtesy) Electrical Engineering at the University of San Diego.
He received his B.Eng. (Hons.) in Information Engineering from the Chinese Univeristy of Hong Kong in 1997, with a minor in Mathematics, and his M.S.E.E. from Polytechnic University, Brooklyn (now Polytechnic Institute of NYU), in 1999.
He then spent a year teachng at his alma mater, Wah Yan College, Kowloon, in Hong Kong.
He also received his M.S. in Operations Research from Columbia University, New York, in 2001, and his Ph.D. from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, in 2005.
His advisors were Professor C. S. George Lee and Professor Karthik Kannan.
He received a Magoon Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2005 while teaching at Purdue.
Professor Koo's research interests include the design and modeling of networks and distributed systems, mechansim design, operations research, and computing education. He was elected to full member of Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society) in 2006. In 2007, he was designated as a National Academy of Engineering CASEE New Faculty Fellow.
Professor Koo is a senior member of IEEE, a fellow of the British Computer Society, and a member of ACM, Upsilon Pi Epsilon, IAENG, and ISOC. He is the faculty advisor of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the computing honor society, and ACM student chapter at USD. He is listed in Who's Who of Emerging Leaders, America's Registry of Outstanding Professionals, and Who's Who in America, and he has an Erdös number of 3 (via Professor Li, Shuo-Yen Robert).
