Dr. Morse was born in New York, received his BS and MS in Biomedical
Engineering from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1981 and 1982. He went on to get his
Ph.D. at age 24 from Clemson University in South Carolina in 1985.
After 18 long months in industry, Dr. Morse joined the
Electrical Engineering Faculty of Auburn University in 1987. During his
first year as an academic he won both an NSF and IEEE initiation grant.
(He declined the IEEE grant.) During his three years at Auburn he
published on the topics
of speech recognition from signals secondary to
speech and electrical stimulation. At Auburn, Dr. Morse advised five
students to Master's degrees and developed a successful consultancy in the
area of electric shock injury and electromechanical product failure. He
has testified as an expert witness in both state and federal court on
several occasions.
In 1990 Dr. Morse received a patent for an electrical
stimulation system using parallel processing architecture.
Also in 1990, Dr. Morse joined the faculty of electrical
engineering at the University of San Diego. In the years that have ensued
Dr. Morse has received Tenure, been promoted to Associate Professor and is
active in teaching, research, and consulting. His ongoing research
includes studying pathways followed by current during an electrical
accident and analyzing the potential for injuries such as Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome. Dr. Morse has taught a broad array of classes but enjoys
computer design classes and classes that focus on the interface between
man and man's technology.
Dr. Morse rounded out his interest in technology
and the law by pursuing and completing a law degree at USD Law School. After
degree completion in 1999, Dr. Morse passed the California bar and was licensed
before the start of the new millennium. His legal interests currently include
technology, academic, and civil rights law. Dr. Morse weaves his legal
knowledge into his teaching on a regular basis.
Dr. Morse is an avid
boater and
became Captain Morse in 1996, receiving a Coast Guard license to charter his
sailboat leading to a short-lived career as the proprietor of "Rustic Luxury
Yacht Charters." In 2001, he lived some of his dreams by spending part of his sabbatical year
cruising aboard his 47 foot Gulfstar Sailmaster. The 6000 mile
adventure included two blue water crossings. Ports of call included Oahu
and Kauai on Hawaii and the inside passage of Alaska. It was the trip of a lifetime which he hopes to repeat
again.
Currently Dr. Morse continues his involvement in teaching,
research and consulting, always with the goal of moving forward and growing in
all aspects of his life.
