"mathematical biography:" Tell me those experiences (positive and
negative) from previous math courses that have had an influence on your present
confidence in doing mathematics, your liking of mathematics, and your attitudes
toward or beliefs about mathematics. Include some goals you have for your
mathematical growth: What would you like to accomplish this year? What are some mathematical abilities you
would like to have? What are your
expectations for this course?

Assignment:
With
your group from class (turn in one per group),
1) Create a number trick
similar to the number trick described in class.
Explain why the trick works using words, numbers, pictures and algebra.
2) Be
ready to present your trick in class and explain why it works.

Read: * Read Chapter 1 in the book to remind yourself of some of the basic
ideas. Pay special attention to the four
different representations used: verbal, graphical, numerical and algebraic.

5-2, 3*4, 12/3, 4^2, 4^3, x+y, x-y, xy, x^2, x^3 (assume x and y are whole numbers).
