Math 115: College Algebra, Fall 2009

Reading and Homework Assignments

Week 9

HOMEWORK #15: Due Tuesday, November 3rd:

Homework is due on my desk before class begins.

Reading Assignment:

Read:          * Read chapter 8 in the book to remind yourself of some of the basic ideas.

Reading Questions:

·        What is scientific notation?  Why is it useful? Try some examples of using scientific notation.

·        What are some rules for exponents for positive integers?  Why do they make sense?

·        What does a 0 exponent do? Why does that make sense?

·        What does a negative exponent do?  Why does that make sense?

·        What is an exponential function?  Give a couple examples of situations that can be modeled using an exponential function.

·        Write some comments and questions on these sections.

Homework Assignment:

·     Please write on the top right-hand of your homework how long you spent on this homework—writing your pen-pal letter, reading and solving problems.

·     pp. 290, #18,19,21,23,25

·     pp.295-296, #17,24,25

·     pp.303, #19-24

·     pp.309-310, #13-17

·     pp.316-317, #14,15,16,19,20

·     pp.325-326, #18,23,24,25,26

·     Explain to a couple of people (roommates, friends, family members) the different possible types of solutions to a system of linear equations.  For each number of possible solutions, show them examples using algebraic and graphical representations.  Write down their reactions.

·     Find some time to work with other students in the class to understand chapter 8.

·     Work out the following problem:  Suppose that you have a choice of renting a car for a week between two plans:

Plan A:  $200 for the week, plus 20 cents per mile.

Plan B:  $300 for the week, plus 10 cents per mile.

(a) If you will drive 150 miles, which plan is better? (b) If you will drive 1400 miles, which plan is better? (c) Define appropriate variables and model each plan with an equation. (d) Graph the equations you found in (c).  What does the intersection of the two lines represent in terms of the situation you are modeling?
