Reading and Homework Assignments

Week 10


Due Thursday, November 8th:

·        Pen pal letters are due by midnight.

 

HOMEWORK #10: Due Tuesday, November 13th:

Reading Assignment:

·        Read section 3.6 of the textbook in preparation for class.

·        Read the introduction to chapter 5 and section 5.1 of the textbook in preparation for class.

Reading Questions:

·        What ideas are involved in the long division algorithm?

·        Go back to page 35 and read about the quotient-remainder theorem.  How is the quotient-remainder theorem involved in long division?

·        What are some ideas that become important when progression from performing long division with a one digit division to a two digit divisor?

·        Describe the teaching sequence for teaching long division.

·        Why is it important to have definitions?

·        What is a theorem? A lemma?

·        What is needed to prove a theorem?

·        What is the product of an even number and an odd number?  Justify your answer.

·        Write some comments and questions on these sections.

Homework Assignment:

·        Please write on the top right-hand of your homework how long you spent on this homework.

·        Homework set 15: problems 1-4.

·        Homework set 19: problems 2,4,5 (some of these problems are done using the same sort of diagrams we used to prove properties).

·        Your initial thoughts for Family Math Night are due today—I have books that can help you to come up with ideas in my office.

·                    Exam#2 Written component: Tuesday, November 20th.

·                    Family Math Night sharing—last 40 minutes of class: Tuesday, November 27th.

·                    Family Math Night: Wednesday, November 28th, 5:00pm-8:00pm at Longfellow School.
