Reading and Homework Assignments

Week 14


HOMEWORK #12: Due Tuesday, December 4th:

Reading Assignment:

·        Read section 5.3 and 5.4 of the textbook.

Reading Questions:

·        What is a prime number?

·        Why is the number 1 not defined to be prime?

·        What is the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic?  How does it relate to the previous question?

·        What is the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra?  How is it similar to the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic?

·        What is the prime factorization of a number?  Give some examples.  You may want to use factor trees to aid you.

·        What is the Sieve of Eratosthenes?  Why does it work to find prime numbers?

·        What would you do to find out if a number is prime?

·        Take a look at the proof that there are infinitely many primes.  What do you understand about the proof?

·        Write some comments and questions on these sections.

Homework Assignment:

Sets: 21#2,3,7, and 22#1,3,4.

Dates coming up:

·                    Oral component of Exam #2: December 3rd - 7th (info coming via email).

·                    Start working on reading sections 5.5 and 6.1 and doing the exercises if you have time.
