Math 200: Mathematics Concepts for Teachers, Fall 2012

Reading and Homework Assignments

Week 5

HOMEWORK #5: Due Tuesday, October 2nd:

Reading Assignment:

Read:

* Read sections 1.4 and 1.5 of the textbook in preparation for class.

Reading Questions:

·        For each of the properties of addition, which property is also a property of subtraction?

·        What are some models that can be used to represent subtraction?

·        What are different interpretations of subtraction?  Explain each one.

·        Describe some strategies that can be used to simplify subtraction.

·        For each of the properties of addition, which property is also a property of multiplication?  Use pictures to illustrate each of these properties.

·        What are some models that can be used to represent multiplication?

·        Explain why some models of multiplication are not as helpful as others to illustrate the commutative property of multiplication.

·        Use a picture to illustrate the distributive property of multiplication over addition.

·        Write some comments and questions on this section.

Homework Assignment:

This assignment asks you to study the textbook to gain insight into how mathematics is developed.

·     Homework set 3 (pp.18-19 of Elementary Mathematics for Teachers): Problems #1-8.

·     On a different piece of paper (don’t turn this one in but bring it to class), select one of your strategies for the addition problem 68 + 24.  Write down the properties of addition that you used to solve the problem step by step.

·     Write a word problem that would result in the division problem 24 divided by 6.

·     Experiment with your iPads.  If the programs are not loaded onto your iPad (try to find iMovie, for example), go to the help desk and have them load the apps for you.

Your pen pal letter is due Thursday, October 4th before class.  Email it to pmyers@sandiego.edu.

HOMEWORK #6: Get this started right away and come to class on Thursday, Oct 4th with questions.  It will be due Tuesday, October 9th:

Reading Assignment:

Read:

·        Re-read sections 1.4 and 1.5 of the textbook and read section 1.6 in preparation for class.

·        Read the article that I sent via email: Using Questions to Help Children Build Mathematical Power.

·        Optional: Read section 1.7 (pages 37-41): Addendum on Classroom Practice.

Reading Questions:

·        What are the two interpretations of division?  How are they different from each other?

·        How is division related to multiplication?

·        What is the Quotient-Remainder Theorem?  Why do you think it is introduced in this section?

·        Share insights and observations on the article: Using Questions to Help Children Build Mathematical Power.

·        Write some comments and questions on this section.

Homework Assignment:

·     Homework sets 4, 5 and 6 (from Elementary Mathematics for Teachers).

·      Answer the questions: Is there a distributive property of division over addition?  Is there a distributive property of division over subtraction? Is there an associative property of subtraction?  Justify.

·     On a different piece of paper (don’t turn this one in but bring it to class again), 1) describe your strategy in words and 2) justify (using the properties of addition as we did in class, step by step) your strategy for the addition problem 68 + 24.

·      On a different piece of paper (don’t turn this one in), write down several word problems that may result in the division problem 24 divided by 6.  Try to include problems using different interpretations and models.  Use a pictorial representation appropriate to your problem.

·      Make up your quizzes.

·      Exam number 1 is on Thursday, October 11th.  Start creating study sessions and reviewing.

Note that homework will not be collected on Tuesday.  It will be collected on Thursday before the test begins so that you have it to study.
