HOMEWORK #7: Due Tuesday, October 23rd:

Reading Assignment:

Read: 

* The handout you will get via email.

* Sections 2.1 (pages 43-46), 2.2 (pages 47-51) and 2.3 (52-56) of the textbook in preparation for class.

Reading Questions:

·        Try some of the homework set 7 problems using the different mental math strategies from section 2.1.

·        What insights did you gain while reading the word problem information and bar method readings?

·        What are some characteristics of a good word problem?

·        Write some comments and questions on this section.

Homework Assignment:

This assignment asks you to study the textbook to gain insight into how mathematics is developed.

·     Homework set 7: Problems #1bcde,2bc,3cdef,4be,5—write intermediate steps as described at the bottom of page 46.

·     Homework set 8, Problems #1,2,3,4.

·     Homework set 9 #Problems #2,3,4,5.

·     Solve the following problems from class using:

o   The model method.

o   Algebra.

1.     Four toy cars cost as much as 3 dolls. Five toy cars cost $3.50 more than 2 dolls. Quincy spent $14 on an equal number of toy cars and dolls. How many toy cars did she buy?

2.     Stacey has 7 cookies. She eats 4 cookies. How many cookies remain?

3.     Jaclyn makes 20 chicken pies for a party.  She makes 6 more pies than Kristen.  How many chicken pies does Kristen make?

4.     Marianne helped her father make 650 candles. After selling some, they had 39 candles left. How many candles did they sell?

5.     Rachel had 47cm of string. After making 3 bows, she had 20cm left.  How long was the string she used for each bow?

6.     Cassidy and Karina collected a total of 160kg of acorns.  Karina collected 3 times as many kg of acorns as Cassidy.  How many kg of acorns did Cassidy collect?

7.     Sammy bought a roll of ribbon.  After using 5/8 of the ribbon to tie some packages, she had 15m of ribbon left.  How many meters of ribbon did she buy?

8.     Lesley cut 1/2 ft pieces of string from a string 1 3/4 ft long? How many 1/2 ft pieces of string did Lesley have when she was done cutting?  (Include fractional pieces of string.)

9.     The bookshelf was full of books.  Paige loves books, so she took half of the books.  Then Kendall came along and noticed the books.  She got an urge to read, so she took a third of the books that were left.  Caroline came by and decided to take a fourth of the remaining books with her to put in her dorm.  Then Mackenna came dashing up and took a book to read during her break.  When Erin looked at the bookshelf, she saw that there were two books left.  "How many books were there in the shelf to begin with?" she asked Meg.
