HOMEWORK #9: Due
Tuesday, November 6th:
Reading Assignment:
·
Read section 3.4
of the textbook in preparation for class.
Pay close attention to the development of the long division algorithm,
the prerequisites for understanding it, and the concepts that will be learned
in the future that need the long division algorithm as a base.
·
Read section 3.5
of the textbook in preparation for class.
Reading Questions:
1.
Why is the long
division algorithm the most important and complicated algorithm taught in
elementary school?
2.
What are the
prerequisites required for learning long division by 1-digit whole
numbers? Explain why these are
prerequisites.
3.
How is the
development of the division algorithm different for the different interpretations
of division?
4.
What is
estimation?
5.
What is simple
estimation?
6.
Should children
learn to estimate or calculate first?
Explain.
7.
Where is
estimation used in elementary school?
8.
Give an example
of a situation where it is advantageous to overestimate.
9.
Give an example
of a situation where it is advantageous to underestimate.
10. Write some comments and questions on these sections.
Homework Assignment:
·
Justify the multiplication algorithm commonly used in the United States step
by step, citing the properties of operations at each step for 52x46.
·
Come ready to class with your iPad video of
your mental strategy for finding 52x46 to share with others.
·
Please write on the top right-hand of your homework how long you spent on
this homework.
·
Explain why the multiplication algorithm makes sense for a) 4x32 and b)
4x36 as we did in class.
·
Watch the video: http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=46231&title=abbott_and_costello.
Explain what is going on
in the different explanations.
·
Explain to a couple of people (roommates, friends, family) why the long
division algorithm makes sense for a) 342 divided by 4 and b) 407 divided by 4
as we did in class (Thursday). Describe
your explanations and your friends’ reactions.
·
Homework set 13, problems 1-7.
·
Homework set 14: problems 2,5,6.
