HOMEWORK #5: Due Monday, February 22nd (reading assignment due February 17th):

 

Reading Assignment:

·       Read sections 2.2 and 2.3, 2.4 for understanding as described in class, and write notes (for yourself) of all the relevant information.  The reading questions below are meant to help you.  Turn in the answers to these questions as part of the homework.

 

Reading Questions:

1. Learn or remind yourself of the following (no need to write them down on the homework, but learn them well): triangle, square, rectangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, dodecagon, n-gon, picture proof, interior angles, exterior angles, symmetry, reflection symmetry, rotational symmetry, line of symmetry, center of symmetry, rotational symmetry of order n, acute triangle, right triangle, obtuse triangle, scalene triangle, isosceles triangle, equilateral triangle, convex, concave, equilateral, equiangular, regular, vertex, vertices, quadrilateral, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square, trapezoid, kite, convex, concave, equilateral, equiangular, regular, vertex, vertices.  Find examples and non-examples to help you.

2.          What are some differences between a definition of triangle that might be given to a grade 2 student versus a definition that might be given to a 4-7th grader.

3.          Prove that the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a triangle is 180 degrees.

4.          Can an object have rotational symmetry but no reflection symmetry?  If so, show an example.  If not, explain why not.

5.          Can an object have reflection symmetry but no rotational symmetry?  If so, show an example.  If not, explain why not.

6.          How many reflection symmetries does a square have?  How many rotational symmetries?  Name them.

7.          Draw a Venn diagram to categorize triangles, isosceles triangles, scalene triangles, equilateral triangles.

1.        Is every square a rectangle?  Explain. 

2.        Is every rectangle a square?  Explain.

 

8.          Write questions and comments you have on the readings for today.
