The Mathematics Center

Guide for Students

1.            Make sure you check in when you arrive.  This information will allow us to keep the Math Center appropriately staffed.

2.    The Mathematics Center is open to all USD students on a walk-in basis.  It may be full when you arrive.  Plan accordingly and do not wait until the last possible moment to seek help.

Get help as soon as you need it!

3.    If the tutors are busy, be sure they know that you need help but also be prepared to wait your turn.  If you have any difficulty identifying the tutors, just ask.

4.    The math center is designed to offer help to students with

Intermediate Algebra

Investigations in Modern Mathematics

College Algebra

Essentials of Trigonometry

Survey of Calculus

Introduction to Probability and Statistics *

Calculus I

Mathematical Concepts for Elementary School Teachers I* and II*

(*special hours each semester)

Students in these courses have priority.

5.    The tutors are here to help you succeed in your math classes.  In order to better help you in your quest to learn mathematics, please do not ask us to do your homework problems and/or exam corrections.  We will use Socratic-type questioning to help you reach understanding.

6.    In order to make sure we make efficient use of your time and our time, read and try to understand the material in advance.  In most cases, the tutors can help you most effectively if you bring specific questions.

7.    Sometimes the tutors will need to refer to your textbook and will take that opportunity to show you how to read it for understanding.  This skill is crucial for success in mathematics.

8.    If you have any questions/suggestions/concerns please contact Dr. Myers at x7932 or email pmyers@sandiego.edu

If someone will keep asking him these questions often
and in various forms, you can be sure that in the end
he will know about them as accurately as anybody ...
And no one having taught him, only asked questions,
yet he will know, having got the knowledge out of himself.
