As an applicant to the University of San Diego I was drawn in by its apparent inclusive environment and commitment to diversity. With a mission statement that promised to value Òstudents, faculty and staff from different backgrounds and faith traditions,Ó I, an ardent atheist and dedicated liberal, was conned into enrolling. However, President LyonsÕ your actions have spoken much louder than any supposed pledge to create Òa community characterized by a rich diversity of people and ideas.Ó By denying Tina Beattie the right to speak on our campus, you have effectively rescinded my acceptance to this university. Putting aside my own personal disgust to be associated with such a bigoted stance against same-sex marriage, I am just completely astonished that an open supporter is prohibited from even visiting our campus. If USD does not tolerate such dissention from conservative Catholicism then LGBTQ students should not be able enroll. The Pride Club, which is ironically celebrating its 21st anniversary this week, should be terminated. If Òsolicited benefactorsÓ want Ò to enhance the Catholic identity of the university,Ó as you say President Lyons, then Muslim students should not be allowed to wear burkas to class and students like me most certainly should not be given full-ride scholarships. As a student of color from a lower socioeconomic background I refuse to be the ÒdiversityÓ USD points to in order to propagate its hidden discriminatory agenda. I completely understand your ÒpositionÓ; dissenters are not welcome and our invitation has been withdrawn. Well, I officially accept your rescission and will be transferring as soon as possible. Take back the $56,000 and my spot in the Honors Program, IÕd much rather keep my voice.
Sincerely Yours,
A disillusioned and soon-to-be former USD freshman
