Biology 376 - Serial Section 3D Reconstructions

updated2 Sept 09

Here is an assortment of 3D reconstructions from serial sections done by the class using the program "Reconstruct" by John Fiala.

To date, I have only static images; sometime soon I hope to add rotating images like those you can see with the program. Click each thumbnail for a larger version.

4 mm frog embryo, from serial cross sections

Three rotations of a partial reconstruction of brain (purple), notochord (pink), and two otic vesicles (yellow-green).

2 day (~Stage 15) chick embryo, from serial cross sections

Labeled reconstruction of central nervous system/neural tube derivatives (labeled by Loer). Note that the reconstruction seems to have removed some curvature of the embryo normally seen in 2 day wholemounts or live embryos, likely from difficulties in correctly aligning adjacent sections.

Four different rotations of the same chick neural tube.

Series of rotating images of 2-day chick heart reconstruction (by Loer).
Rotation proceeds top to bottom, right to left (restarting on the right on the next line down).
