Look at the list of materials you need for lab in the syllabus; it is not absolutely essential to have all of these for first lab, but definitely get them as soon as possible. You will need them by the second lab. You will conclude the first lab by taking a quiz, which includes material from the assigned reading.
The papers are complex and will require many readings (and, likely reading beyond the original articles), and coordination among all the presenters. You will want to get started as soon as possible.
