Common Questions for Graduation: - 100 hours of research. Once you have completed your 100 hours, your research mentor will share this with the Dept who will then have your DegreeWorks requirement approved. (More info and some links coming soon) If you plan to take a summer class you MUST FIRST get the course approved by submitting a petition to transfer credit form. Login to your MySan Diego portal, submit your online petition(s) via Torero Hub/My Academics/Transfer Credit Processing). Credits will be posted to your records only after the registrar has received your official transcript for the approved course. |
General Chemistry:
Check to see if the school is on the quarter or semester system. If the school is on the quarter system, you will have to take TWO quarters of general chemistry to equal a single semester of USD chemistry. Labs are more complicated and we will examine your choice once submitted.
Online courses are not accepted.
Many universities offer chemistry courses that are not intended for science majors and will not be approved as a transfer course. If the proposed course is required for the chemistry major at the transfer school, the class is likely the correct course.
Another check is if the general chemistry class in question is a prerequisite for organic chemistry at the same university- if yes, then the gen chem course will likely be approved for transfer.
All transfer courses will be examined on a case by case basis. This guidance provided here is intended to help you make an informed transfer request.
If you plan to take organic chemistry please contact Dr. Khuong and she can help you get registered. IF you don't pass the course you will be dropped. It is up to YOU to work with the registrar/onestop to get your transcript sent to USD!
Organic Chemistry: Taking a year of organic chemistry in the summer is very difficult. It will not help your preparation and often shows up in a poor MCAT. However, if you need to do so, we will approve your request as long as the course is appropriate. As for all summer classes, you will HAVE to get the course pre-approved as described above BEFORE you take the class.
You do not need a specific number of units to enroll in organic chem, just fulfill the pre-requisit of CHEM 152.
Check to see if the school is on the quarter or semester system. If the school is on the quarter system, you will have to take TWO quarters of organic chemistry to equal a single semester of chemistry at USD. Labs are more complicated and we will examine your choice once submitted. We do not accept online courses.
UPPER DIVISION CREDITS: If the school offering the class is a four-year institution and the course is a 300 level class or above, the course (if approved) will be transfered as upper division. IF the approved class is a 200 level course OR if the course is taught at a Community College, USD requires that the class shows on your transcript as a lower division course. This could impact your graduation. You are required to have 48 Upper Division courses - PLEASE consider this when planning your courses for graduation. Students often take a science elective or a core or other class at a 300/400 level to adjust for the UD credit count.
IF you are taking Organic Chemistry over the summer, you will not be able to register for Biochemistry UNTIL YOU HAVE PASSED THE CLASS. You will not be able to pre-register for biochemistry until the course is approved, taken, passed and shows up on your transcript with OneStop.
