Juvenile Hall

Background

There are three units where tutors will be working with young offenders, often with a low reading level. The tutoring schedule is as follows:

  • Monday 6:30 PM

- Unit 300 - Partially Spanish speaking and overflow of 16 year olds

- Unit 900 - 16-year old boys

  • Saturday 12:45 PM

- Unit 400 - Girls' unit

Detainees are waiting for trial, a hearing, or a placement.

Community Service Learning Activities/Outcomes

USD students and detainees will work together on literacy activities with the intention that detainees’ interest in reading and writing will increase. Avoid discussing personal issues beyond literacy. Psychologists are the only persons who deal with more personal therapeutic issues. USD students need to demonstrate responsibility and respect for others. A mandatory literacy seminar will be held on both Wednesday, February 12th OR Thursday, February 13th from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in Salomon Hall. You must attend ONE of these meetings. Students must commit to a minium of 12 hours for the semester.

Additional Information

The USD student Juvenile Hall team leaders will organize the weekly activity, take attendance, and answer any questions. A group of 12 USD students will be assigned to each unit. Students must include their social security number, driver's license number, and birth date on the sign up sheets for security clearance. If disruptions occur in a unit an activity may be canceled at any time. Under no circumstances should names or addresses of juveniles be divulged to anyone. Never give out your phone number. A strict dress code is enforced at Juvenile Hall. USD students MUST dress conservatively.

Needs addressed

The average reading level for detainees is 4th grade. They need support for academic improvement and motivation for education. Many have no family or friends who have attended college and the detainees ask very basic questions about the college experience.
