Rosa Parks Elementary

Background

Rosa Parks Elementary School is located in the mid-city area of San Diego with an enrollment of over 1,560 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the City Heights Educational Pilot, begun in 1998, a unique six-year partnership between San Diego State University, San Diego City School District, San Diego Education Association, Price Charities, and the community of City Heights. As a community school, partners in education, after school programs, health and social service providers, academic school-based activities and parent involvement opportunities are focused on providing a quality of education for all Rosa Parks students and their families. Parents at Rosa Parks are involved with their children's education, and more than 18,000 hours in 2000-2001. Ethnic Composition is Hispanic (72.8%), African-American (10.5%), Indochinese/Asian (14.0%), White (1.9%), and Other (0.8%).

Community Service Learning Activities/Outcomes

Students will tutor in the classroom. Best times are 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM and after school tutoring (2:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M).

Additional Information

Students will fill out volunteer applications for the school and obtain evidence of a recent TB test. Tests are available at the Health Center for $5.00. (M-W 1:00 - 4:00 PM and F 1:00 - 3:30 PM).

Needs addressed

The mid-city area has the greatest linguistic diversity in San Diego. Over 100 different languages are represented in the schools. Many children need individual assistance to learn English and improve their academic performance.
