Community Service Learning Guidelines

1. Background Reading

Before you get too far into your community service learning experience, you should complete the background reading indicated below for each site:

Agency Relevant Chapters
Juvenile Hall Chs. 16, 15 (pp. 372 - 379)
Rosa Parks Elementary Chs. 15 (skip pp. 379 - 387), 14
St. Vincent de Paul Chs. 17 (pp. 459 - 462), 18, 14
University Canyon Chs. 14, 18, 15 (pp. 372 - 379)

2. Reflective Journal

One of the key components of the experiential learning process is reflection on your activities. You should make regular entries into a personal reflective journal after each agency service session. The entries should include the following:

  • A description of the activities that occurred during the session.
  • A discussion of your impressions about the session's experiences.

3. Summary Paper

Write a short (2-3 pages) paper summarizing your experience and relating it to the material from the class. You should address the following questions:

  • What were your expectations about the experience prior to starting it? Did the experience match your expectations? If not, how did it differ from what you expected?
  • Did the experience change your views about the related urban issues? If so, how? If not, what are your views and how were they reinforced?
  • How did your experience relate to the background reading and the material covered in class?
